Application submitted for demolition of Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre
St Helens Borough Council has submitted plans for the demolition of the former Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre - a positive step forward in unlocking the potential of the prominent site on the edge of St Helens Town Centre.

Article date: 24 April 2025
The application comes following a Cabinet decision in November 2022 to approve funding for the demolition, and the recent successful completion of essential preparatory work by Scottish Power that has seen the relocation of an integrated electricity sub-station that previously serviced the Ashcroft Street leisure facility which has reached its end of life having been closed since 2019 due to structural issues.
The demolition is crucial to progress this site as part of the borough's growth and regeneration opportunities, as well as ambitions to raise aspirations and improve health inequalities.
The council's regeneration partner, English Cities Fund (ECF), is finalising an Outline Business Case for a new leisure, wellbeing and training complex in partnership with St Helens R.F.C. and we will ensure residents are kept informed on significant updates at the earliest opportunity.
Pending planning approval, demolition is expected to begin later this year, following the appointment of a contractor through a competitive tender process that will include for topsoiling and seeding of the area.
