St Helens Together Against Stigma: Anti-Stigma Charter and Council Sign-Up
This seeks DED for formal Council sign-up and borough-wide endorsement of the St Helens Together Against Stigma Charter.
To approve formal Council sign-up and borough-wide endorsement of the St Helens Together Against Stigma Charter.
• People affected by substance use, mental health, and social disadvantage, often face stigma, loneliness and isolation. • The Anti-Stigma Charter was developed collaboratively through the St Helens Together Against Stigma Working Group, funded by the drug and alcohol grant. • The charter is a collective pledge for organisations and individuals to treat individuals with compassion, dignity, and respect. • The St Helens Together Against Stigma campaign launched the charter in September 2024 with a showing of Sticks and Stones, a 30-minute lived-experience film. • Since then, 60 statutory and voluntary sector organisations and 150 individuals have signed the charter. • The initiative aligns with the priorities of the Inequalities Commission and the St Helens Place-Based Partnership, supporting a compassionate, inclusive approach to reducing stigma and health inequalities across services. • Two Inequalities Commission workshops were run in 2025 to further promote the principles and charter.
The St Helens Together Against Stigma Charter has begun to influence culture within services, with staff reporting greater awareness of how language and attitudes affect those seeking support. The Charter features in the Combating Drugs Partnership and Inequalities Commission action plans, and has been recognised regionally by the North West Anti-Stigma Network, Liverpool John Moores University, and OHID North West.
