Exclusions Advice for Schools

Exclusions Model Letters

  • Model letter 1
    From headteacher notifying parent of a fixed term exclusion of less than 6 days in one term.
  • Model letter 1a
    From headteacher notifying parent of a lunchtime half-day exclusion totalling a fixed period exclusion of less than 6 days per term.
  • Model letter 2
    From headteacher notifying parent of a fixed term exclusion of 6-15 days or where cumulative exclusions in the same term fall within this range.
  • Model letter 3
    From headteacher notifying parent of a fixed period exclusion of 16 days or more or where cumulative exclusions in the same term are 16 days or more.
  • Model letter 4
    From the headteacher notifying parent of a permanent exclusion.

DfE Exclusion Reason Codes

When schools exclude pupils, they should record the appropriate DfE reason code on SIMS. Please note: the OT (Other) category should be used sparingly as most incidents will be covered by the other codes.
