School Attendance and COVID-19 update

Read the latest advice from the Department of Education on COVID-19.

As a parent it is your legal responsibility to ensure your child goes to school. If they cannot go for any reason, you should tell the school and they may authorise the absence.

The current persistent absence threshold, of around 15%, means a pupil has to be absent for 56 sessions (28 days) of school to be classified as persistently absent.

From the beginning of the academic year, 2015 to 2016, the government reduced the persistent absence threshold from 15% cent to 10%.

The table below shows estimated cumulative absent sessions thresholds for around 10%.

Half-term 1 7 or more sessions
Half-term 1-2 (Autumn Term) 14 or more sessions
Half-term 1-3 20 or more sessions
Half-term 1-4 (Autumn and Spring Terms combined 25 or more sessions
Half-term 1-5 31 or more sessions
Half-term 1-6 (full academic year) 38 or more sessions
