Love food hate waste have a number of top food tips to help you:

  • Before you go shopping check your cupboards, fridge/freezer to see what you already have and make a list of the things you need
  • Are you going to be eating at home every night this week, is everyone going to be home for every meal? If not, you probably won't need as much food as usual so make sure your shopping trolley doesn't over indulge!
  • The use by date on food means you NEED to eat it by this date or it might be unsafe
  • The best before date is a guide, you can eat food safely after this date but it may not be at its best
  • Display until and sell by dates are only on foods so that the shops can manage their stock more effectively. Ignore these dates; they have nothing to do with when you have to eat your food by
  • Check the advice on the packet to see where is best to keep your food. Some foods need to be kept cold but others might spoil more quickly if put in the fridge
  • Keep food fresh in the freezer when it is close to its use by date. Check the packet for the freezer friendly logo before you freeze it
  • The freezer is your friend. Use your freezer to store left overs so you've always got meals ready to take out
  • Portions – Don’t make too much food; it is always best to try and measure or weigh your food. The most common foods that we make too much of are potatoes and other veg, rice, pasta and spaghetti.   • You can compost some food waste, such as eggshells, tea bags and fruit and veg peelings by using a compost bin or green bin if you have one
  1. Check the cupboards, fridge and freezer before you go shopping and make a list. It may sound dull but it makes the actual shopping trip so much easier - no trying to think if you've already got one, no trudging round looking at every single item - just turn up, get what you need, and head home!
  2. Make a meal plan - yes, you may now be thinking 'what an effort' but believe us, not having to think of meals in the supermarket and not getting home and finding out you have bought loads but nothing that could be turned into a meal makes it all worthwhile.
  3. Make the most of offers! We can make some real savings if we think before we buy - just get into the habit of checking first if you can use the other one. Does it say it's suitable for freezing - buy one, freeze one? Could you cook double and freeze half for another time? If it's a BOGOF could one of your family, friends or work colleagues make use of the extra one - buy one, share one?
  4. Check out what's in season and therefore good on price. Food in season is often cheaper than other fruit and veg you might normally buy. If you get some really good prices try freezing some for the months ahead.
  5. When possible, substitute inexpensive sources of protein such as beans for more expensive meat, fish, or poultry. A great way to do this is in spaghetti bolognese where lentils bulk the dish out but absorb the flavour of the meat.
