Cllr Baines, who represents Windle and has served as chairman of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Commission, will formally assume the role by procedural ratification at the annual council meeting on Wednesday 22 May.

Cllr Baines will also declare his cabinet appointments at this meeting.

He said: “It’s an honour to have been chosen to lead St Helens Council.

“The council and our borough face some big challenges, but we also have some great opportunities and there is huge potential in St Helens. I believe that with the right approach both from councillors and council officers, working with and for our communities, that the years to come can be an exciting time for us all.

“I will be appointing my cabinet in the coming days and we will be making more announcements in the weeks to come. I’m looking forward to getting on with the job.”

Cllr Baines will take over from Cllr Derek Long, who announced in April that he would be stepping down from the role.
