Article date - 21 December 2018

A Blackbrook great grandfather of five has become the latest senior citizen to prove that age doesn’t have to get in the way of keeping active after being presented with an honorary leisure centre membership.

Ted Morrison (pictured centre), who has been a member at Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre since 2008, turned the grand age of 90 on Tuesday (18 December) and to mark the occasion was gifted a free Go Active membership for life on his birthday.

The honorary membership offer for Go Active members aged 90 and over was introduced last year, and has so far seen three people benefit from free leisure time.

Ted, who visits Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre most mornings where he does between 20-30 lengths of the swimming pool, said: “This is great for people like me who live on their own because I visit the leisure centre most days which is a great way to pass the time.

“I really enjoy the company down there and my daily swims set me up for the day.”

After presenting Ted with his honorary membership, St Helens Council’s portfolio holder for leisure services, Councillor Anthony Burns (pictured centre-left), said: “It was a real pleasure to meet Ted and award him with his honorary membership. What a guy he is! His commitment to fitness and enjoying it is an example to us all. I hope his story can encourage all of us to do a little extra to help keep ourselves fit and healthy.

"Unfortunately, it can be difficult for us as we get older to get out and enjoy an independent lifestyle, so it's important that we offer a range of options and incentives like this to keep people active and provide opportunities to socialise."

Any Go Active members who are eligible for an honorary membership can visit their local Go Active leisure centre for more details or call either 01744 671720 or 671726.
