Children and Young People 5 ways to Wellbeing campaign launched

A campaign which seeks to promote children and young people’s health and wellbeing has been launched by St Helens Council’s Healthy Living team.

‘Children and Young People 5 ways to Wellbeing’ aims to encourage 10,000 children and young people across the borough to adopt five simple evidence-based actions that can help them become happier, healthier – and able to cope with certain situations, especially when things aren’t going great

Year 9 students from Cowley International College - who did their own campaign last year based around national mental health programme, Time to Talk - attended the launch at St Helens town hall, where they took part in group activities such as making mood jars and coming up with their own healthy food recipes - and listened to speakers about how the five actions; ‘connect’, ‘take notice’, ‘keep learning’, ‘be active’ and ‘be creative’ can be introduced into their everyday lives.

Sue Williamson, Head of Library Services for St Helens Council, informed the young people in attendance how connecting with family and friends by spending time with them - whether it be at home, in school or the community - can have a positive effect on their wellbeing; Heather Doward, Joint district Commissioner For South East district St Helens Guides, explained the health and wellbeing benefits of finding the time to play and be creative; St Helens Council’s Community Food team discussed how learning and trying out new things can boost confidence; Linda Smith, Mental Health and Wellbeing Director for the Three Saints Academy, delivered a speech about taking notice to thoughts and feelings– and St Helens Sports Development Participation Officer Gemma Webster educated pupils on the importance of being active.

Speaking after the event, St Helens Council’s Interim Director of Public Health, Sue Forster, said: “The Children and Young People 5 ways to Wellbeing initiative is designed around the needs and interests of children and young people to boost their wellbeing so that they can live a happy and healthy life.

“Following these five simple steps can dramatically decrease stress and anxiety levels and help children young people develop a real sense of purpose from the opportunities available to them.”
