A part of history - tell us your story

We are living through an extraordinary period in history. At St Helens Archive Service, it’s our job to tell the story of the borough and its people. Our history is a shared one, and we’re asking you to take part.

We’d like to encourage you, the people of St Helens, to record your experiences of coronavirus (COVID-19), which we can preserve in the archives so that future generations can understand what we are living through.

What you can do

Take photographs. Anyone can upload photographs to the St Helens Community Archive, as long as they relate the life in the borough of St Helens.  Show us the view outside your window, show us your garden, your daily walk, where you work. We want to see how life has changed, so take photographs of empty shelves, queues or notices. Upload photographs directly to the Community Archive website or submit contributions by email to archives@sthelens.gov.uk.

Collect related material. Please keep any notices, messages or leaflets that you are able to, which will tell future generations what life was like at this time. If in doubt, save it! Contributions can be submitted by email to archives@sthelens.gov.uk or delivered in person once it is safe to do so.

Make sure you are always following government health advice and do not put yourself at risk to collect items or take photographs.

Keep a diary or scrapbook. It can be as simple or as detailed as you like. What are you doing, feeling, seeing, eating? How is the situation affecting you, your friends and family? What is the weather like? How are you spending each day? What is in the shops? What do you miss? What is the impact on your work, education, hobbies?

Anyone can take part - from all walks of life and all ages, including children. Here's an activity sheet for children who would like to take part.

Your diary can be in electronic format (for example, a Word document) or hand-written. You can make it anonymous or very personal. We will treat everything you send us with care and sensitivity. Contributions can be submitted by email to archives@sthelens.gov.uk or delivered in person once it is safe to do so.

Create songs, poems and sketches. Record your personal experiences creatively. Contributions can be submitted by email to archives@sthelens.gov.uk or delivered in person once it is safe to do so.

Help us document the experiences of ordinary people living through this extraordinary time. Pieces chosen for the collection will be preserved as part of the St Helens Archive Service's permanent collections and may form part of a future exhibition.
