Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning

The Certificate is aimed at adults wishing to gain a recognised qualification in order to gain employment as a Learning Assistant, or adults who are currently working in schools and are seeking a professional qualification.

The course provides the knowledge required to begin to work in schools. The Certificate covers a range of topics including:

  • Understanding children and young people’s development
  • Maintain relationships with children and young people
  • Understand schools as organisations
  • Safeguarding children and young people
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment
  • Support the health and safety of children and young people
  • Support positive behaviour in a learning environment
  • Contribute to team work in a learning environment
  • Understanding children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Promote an effective learning environment
  • Provide displays in a learning environment


The course will be assessed through the building of a portfolio, completion of assignments and observations within a school environment. *

* You will need to arrange your own placement in a school.


The course will run over three terms for a maximum of one day a week. The cost of the course is £800 (TBC), which can be paid in instalments and includes the cost of accreditation. Learners, who are in receipt of benefits, may be exempt from course fees.


Please note: If you are interested in this course you will need to either provide GCSE certificates in English and maths, or complete a short assessment to demonstrate that you are able to work at the appropriate level required.
