SHAP Supported Lodgings

Would you like to make a difference to a young person’s life?
Do you have a spare room that you are willing to let?
Can you provide a young person with a home and support them to be independent?

Then SHAP's supported lodgings scheme could be just the thing for you...

Supported lodgings

Supported lodgings offer young people an opportunity to benefit from the supported atmosphere of a family home. SHAP's scheme helps people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of experiencing housing difficulties, or who are transitioning to living independently.

But we need more local householders to help us with this.

As a supported lodgings host, you will receive support from our designated project worker, who will:

  • arrange regular meetings with you to provide advice and support
  • provide training for you and the young person
  • work closely with you and the young person to help them become independent.

A 24/7 telephone support service is available and hosts receive a weekly payment, which covers the cost of supporting and housing a young person.

You don’t need qualifications as training will be offered and we welcome the involvement of hosts from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds to reflect the diversity of the young people in need of support.

You can be a host whether you are single, a couple, a family, at work or retired. Ideally you will live in St Helens but some of our hosts live just outside of the area.

"Over the past six years, six young people have lived with me. The last two stayed for over two years and had become homeless. One had family relationship breakdowns and the other’s parents had recently and suddenly divorced.

"Both now live in their own homes: one holds down two jobs and the second is in full time education. Both are amazing well grounded, happy and well adjusted.

"It has been a privilege and a very humbling experience to have been a part of their lives. I always wanted to do something worthwhile and give something back and this project gave me the opportunity to do that.

"It is so fulfilling to see the young people live independently and have happy lives." (CD, 2018)

As a host, you will need to provide comfort, stability and security when welcoming young people into your home. If you are kind, patient and sensitive to the needs of young people, we would love to hear from you.
