Keeping Warm & Well in Winter

St.Helens Council and Age UK Mid Mersey don’t want to see anyone struggle in winter. That's why every year we hold the Winter Warmer Events to offer advice and give out useful packs to our most in-need and vulnerable residents, completely free.


Top Tips to Stay Warm
& Well
Older people who may be frail, or who have existing health conditions, are particularly at risk as are younger children.

  • Heat your rooms to at least 18°C
  • Get your flu vaccination if you’re eligible – it’s free
  • Keep an eye on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be vulnerable to the cold
  • Stay tuned to the weather forecast and plan ahead
  • Check whether you meet the criteria and register for priority service with your energy and water suppliers
  • Have regular hot meals and drinks throughout the day, and keep active to help you stay warm
  • Get financial support to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills
  • Have your heating and cooking appliances checked regularly
  • Wear a few layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer, and wear shoes with slip resistant, good grip soles when you go outside


Volunteer
We're also looking for volunteers. Age UK Mid Mersey and other agencies are recruiting people to offer further assistance to our vulnerable residents in the event of severe weather this winter. If you’re interested in becoming a Cold Weather Volunteer, you should have a reasonable level of fitness as, as well as keeping an eye on people, jobs such as clearing snow from driveways and paths and using salt/grit may be required.

Project partners also want to hear from people who can act as ‘Tele-Befrienders’. This is a great way to keep people, who may be isolated and particularly so when bad weather strikes, in touch and feel safe with regular phone calls. Anyone who wants to help out in any way can register their details by calling the St.Helens Cold Weather Advice Line on Freephone 08000 355 878.

We’re all more likely to feel the chill in winter, but cold weather can lead to very serious health problems, such as heart attacks, strokes or pneumonia, and sometimes the cold weather can even kill – especially if you have a long-term health condition or are 65 or over. There are several things that you can do to help yourself stay healthy in Winter.

Eat Well

Eating regular meals will help keep your energy levels up during Winter. Have plenty of hot food and drinks, plan your meals and keep your diet as varied as possible. Aim to include your daily five portions of fruit and vegetables. Stock up on tinned and frozen foods so that you don’t have to go out too much when it’s cold or icy.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle

You probably know that keeping yourself as fit and healthy as you can is important all year round, but your lifestyle can make even more of a difference when it comes to keeping well in Winter.

Stay Active

We all know that exercise is good for your overall health – and it can keep you warm in Winter. If you can stay active, even moderate exercise can bring health benefits. If possible, try to move around at least once an hour. But remember to speak to your GP before starting any exercise plan.

Dress for the weather

Wear lots of thin layers – clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres are particularly good and help to maintain body heat.
