Home Insulation

Insulating your home will:

  • Save you money by reducing your heating bills
  • Help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions

Please look at the sections below for further details about home insulation.

Assistance may be available to help with insulating your home and in some cases may be provided free of charge.

Should you require further information about anything in the Home Insulation section, please contact a member of the Affordable Warmth Team on 01744 676555, email us, or contact the Save Energy Advice Line on 0800 043 0151.

Insulation works by reducing the rate at which your home loses heat. You can reduce heat loss in your home by making sure it is properly insulated. In an un-insulated house:

  • 26% of heat is lost through the roof
  • 33% is lost through the walls
  • 18% is lost through the windows
  • 11% is lost through the floor and the door
  • 12% is lost due to draughts and essential ventilation

There are many different products available, the main types of insulation are:

Loft Insulation

Installing loft insulation to a depth of at least 270 mm (10.8 '') could save around *25% of your heating costs.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is the most cost effective measure after loft insulation and could save you up to *£135 a year.

Hot Water Tank Jacket

Insulate your hot water cylinder. Even if your tank is already insulated, if it is less than 75mm (3'') thick you could save even more money by fitting another new jacket around the existing one.

Other Insulation Measures - Hard To Treat Properties

Other insulation measures are available for properties where standard cavity wall insulation is not a suitable option. A variety of insulation products are available for solid wall and hard to treat cavity properties.
