FAQs - couples with a ceremony in St Helens

While your ceremony is very important to us we must adhere to the current government restrictions for England, effective from Monday 21 December 2020. Please read the following frequently asked questions.

  1. We have had to cancel our wedding due to the national lockdown. Can we re-book for another date?
We are moving ceremonies to new dates for those who have been affected by the national lockdown. Please contact us by email at registryoffice@sthelens.gov.uk.

  2. Will I have to pay to re-book my postponed ceremony?
No, if you have been affected by the national lockdown and paid the reservation booking fee, any re-booking of your ceremony will be moved at no cost to you. The reservation booking fee of £40 will cover the cost of the change of date due to COVID-19.

  3. Can I change the date of my wedding now?
Yes, you can change the date of your wedding. Please email registryoffice@sthelens.gov.uk to check the availability of a registrar before confirming any dates with your wedding planner.

  4. I have paid in full for my ceremony. Will I have to pay more if I move the date to next year?
No, any ceremony fees you have already paid can either be refunded, if you choose to cancel, or moved to a new date. Please check www.sthelens.gov.uk/marriage for updates. Please note this does not include the reservation booking fee of £40.

  5. I should have had my ceremony by now. Are you re-booking on a first-come, first-served basis?
We are re-booking ceremonies in date order, which is the fairest way of dealing with all the ceremonies that have been postponed from March 2020. Please contact us at registryoffice@sthelens.gov.uk.

  6. Can I cancel my ceremony and get a refund of the ceremony costs?
Yes, you can, if you provide us with the following details: the ceremony payment amount (please note this does not include the reservation fee of £40, which is non-refundable), the date payment was made, the name of the payee and the last four digits only from the card used to make the payment. Please email these details with your name and address and date of ceremony for validation purposes to registryoffice@sthelens.gov.uk.

  7. What are my ceremony costs?
Please read this information on the cost of a ceremony in St Helens.

  8. Will I get the date I want as I've already moved my date with my venue?
We will do what we can to accommodate your first choice but this may not always be possible. Please understand we may already be fully booked for certain dates in 2021.

  9. Can I choose what time I get married?
No, this has never been possible. The times are governed by availability in the registrar’s diary, which is carefully managed.

  10. I’m due to get married in a venue. Can I change this to a register office?
If you have given notice (the legal process) for a venue, the legal document issued will state the name of the venue and this cannot be changed. Therefore, you would need to give a fresh notice of intention to marry or form a civil partnership once the restrictions are lifted and face-to-face appointments resume. Please check www.sthelens.gov.uk/marriage for updates.

  11. I’ve paid for a notice appointment and not completed the process. What will happen with that fee?
We are taking notice appointments in date order of ceremony only as we have a backlog of customer appointments. Your notice appointment will be moved to a new date as you have already paid for this service. Please email registryoffice@sthelens.gov.uk if you think this applies to you.
