Food and agriculture

We play an important role in protecting consumers with regard to food. Some of the ways in which we do this are by:

  • Carrying out checks to make sure food labelling is not misleading
  • Conducting checks on the composition of food
  • Checking pubs and restaurants for spirit substitution
  • Inspecting restaurant menus to make sure they are not misleading
  • Advising food manufacturers and importers to ensure their labels and food comply with the relevant legislation
  • Conducting a range of sampling initiatives to ensure that food is compliant
  • Ensuring that food that is subject to food alerts is withdrawn from sale

If you have a complaint or query on the standard or labelling of food that you have purchased, you can contact us on 0808 223 1133 or tradingstandards@sthelens.gov.uk.

We work closely with the Environmental Health section and they can assist with complaints and queries regarding the hygiene and safety of food premises. You can find more information on the Environmental Health page.

Animal feed

We are involved in the inspection, sampling and monitoring of production and storage of animal feedstuffs to ensure they are wholesome and not harmful to either the animal or the human food chain.

The Food Standards Agency has further advice if you think you may need to register.
