Dog welfare

Our Dog Welfare and Enforcement Officers are authorised under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Officers may issue Improvement Notices to dog owners who are not caring for their dogs properly. If an officer believes there is a serious case of neglect, and the owner has failed in their duty of care to the animal, they may be prosecuted.  This could lead to a criminal record, a fine of unlimited cost and/or a custodial sentence.

An owner has a duty of care to provide the basic 5 needs of an animal.

The need to:

  • provide a suitable environment
  • provide a suitable diet
  • exhibit normal behaviour
  • be housed with or apart from other animals
  • be protected from pain, suffering and disease

Our officers do not investigate matters of cruelty or neglect within a home environment, any concerns of this nature should be reported to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999
