Tell Us Once

When someone who lives in St Helens has died, just Tell Us Once and let us help you to tell the people who need to know.

The death of a loved one is hard enough and there are lots of things that need to be done at a time when you least feel like doing them.

With St Helens Council's 'Tell Us Once' service, we aim to make some of the legal requirements that bit easier and save you time.

You Tell Us Once and we'll tell all of the relevant services within St.Helens Council as well as other Government agencies for you.

Registering a Death

When someone has died in England or Wales their death needs to be registered within the district it took place, within 5 days of the date of death.

More information can be found on our Registering a Death page.

Currently, even once you've notified the Registrar, you would still have to contact a number of other departments and agencies to provide them with the same information, but with Tell Us Once, we can do that for you.

If you wish to use Tell Us Once with St Helens Council, you will have to make an appointment and visit us in person.

To make an appointment, please call 01744 676789 or go to our Contact Centre at Wesley House, Corporation Street, St Helens WA10 1HF.

To make it easier for you, you can have your Tell Us Once appointment at the same time as registering the death, or you can book an appointment at another time, convenient to you.

Alternatively, you can contact the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) directly on freephone 0800 085 7308 and an advisor can go through the service with you. Council and Government services will be notified in the same way as they would if you visited St Helens Council.

To get the best out of the service and to ensure that the correct information is given to all of the organisations that we contact on your behalf, please bring with you the following information about the person who has died:

  • Their death certificate
  • Their National Insurance (NI) number and date of birth
  • Your National Insurance (NI) number¬† or date of birth
  • Their Driving Licence or Driving Licence number*
  • Their Passport* or Passport number and town/country of birth
  • Details of any benefits* or services* they were receiving

* As applicable

We may also ask you for contact details for:

  • A surviving husband, wife or civil partner
  • Their next of kin (this means the closest relative by blood or marriage to the deceased)
  • The person dealing with their estate (the person sorting out their property, belongings and money)
  • If you are the next of kin, your entitlement to benefits may change, so please have to hand your own National Insurance (NI) number and date of birth when you contact us.
  • If you are not the next of kin, or the person who is dealing with the deceased's estate, you can still use the service as long as you obtain their permission to provide their details and act on their behalf.

The information you provide will be treated securely and confidentially. Your advisor can provide you with the full privacy statement.

The other agencies we contact on your behalf will use the information primarily to update their records. They may use this information in other ways, but only as the law allows.

Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that all organisations that pay you a benefit or credit, or provide you with a service, have correct and up-to-date information about you.

Your Tell Us Once Adviser may also be able to help you find other information, services and support to help you through this difficult time.

Depending on your circumstances, this may involve the need for a follow-up appointment so that we can fully address all of your needs.

To speak to one of our Tell Us Once advisers please contact us on 01744 676789.
