School clothing allowance

If you are on a low income, we may be able to provide you with financial help towards the cost of buying your child's school uniform.

Qualifying Criteria

You must live within the borough of St Helens and be in receipt of at least one qualifying benefit or award:

  • Housing Benefit;
  • Council Tax Reduction; or
  • eligible to claim free school meals because you receive a qualifying benefit.

Amount paid

You will receive one payment each year in respect of each qualifying child, as follows: 

Age as at 31st August School Year
Between 4 and 10 years of age Reception - Year 6 £29.50
Between 11 and 15 years of age Year 7 - 11 £44.00

Please note:  You will not receive a school clothing allowance payment if your child is attending an Academy school and is being provided with a school uniform.

How to Apply:

We will assess eligibility for school clothing allowance as part of administering new claims for housing benefit, council tax reduction and free school meals.  In such cases, you will not normally be required to provide any additional evidence as part of the claim process.

If you only wish to apply for school clothing allowance please complete the separate application form and provide supporting evidence of your qualifying award.

Annual Review

Your award of school clothing allowance will be automatically renewed each year providing your circumstances have not changed and you are still in receipt of a qualifying award. Review forms will be sent out if you live with someone else and do not receive housing benefit or council tax reduction; or where your child will change school in September.

Payment

Annual payments will normally be made in July each year in respect of the next school year. Payments in respect of new claims will be made between July and 31st March. New claims received from April will be paid in July in respect of the next school year. 

Payment will normally be made by Post Office payment.  You will receive a bar coded letter from the Post Office within 7 to 10 working days following receipt of your award letter. This letter, together with two items of identity, can be taken to any Post Office and exchanged for cash.
