The Local History and Archives Library holds the historic records of St.Helens Borough Council and some of its old constituent authorities (Billinge and Winstanley, Haydock, Newton-le Willows and Rainford). It also holds good collections of local business archives, family estate papers and local history collections of books, pamphlets, local newspapers, maps and photographs.

All this material can be freely consulted in the Search Room on the First Floor of the Central Library building in Victoria Square, where staff are always available to provide assistance.

Many enquiries are of a family history nature and extensive collections of local, national and sometimes international data are held in hard copy or electronic format. Courses are sometimes held on family history and other subjects.

Although most of the stock in the Search Room may be consulted without an appointment, it is advisable, if you intend to use a micro-form reader or computer, to make a booking  before visiting the library as this equipment is often in great demand.

Telephone bookings may be made by ringing 01744 676952 or emailing
