Rugby fans inspired to foster

St.Helens Council is one of 23 local authorities from across the North West teaming up with Super League’s top sides to help drive home the message that more foster carers are urgently needed.

St Helens RFC have lent their support to the North West You Can Foster campaign, with interim Coach Mike Rush commenting:

“You Can Foster is a groundbreaking campaign, showcasing how authorities can work together to promote the wellbeing of vulnerable children on a very large scale and with real ‘team spirit’. Saints are keen to support You Can Foster’s drive to recruit more foster carers in St.Helens and throughout the North West.  We hope that our fans will take the time to consider if they could become fostering families.”

As well as gaining the support of individual clubs including Saints, Warrington, Widnes and Wigan, local authorities will be using the Super League Magic Weekend (26 and 27 May), to promote the urgent need for more carers to come forward.

As some of the biggest battles in rugby league play out on the pitch at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, the You Can Foster team hope to inspire rugby fans, a traditionally family-orientated audience, to think about how they could use their skills and experiences to provide a nurturing home for a child in need.

Fostering recruitment teams from across the North West will be on hand in the stadium’s Fanzone to receive enquiries, answer any questions and to take the contact details of any prospective carers who may wish to receive further information. Giant QR codes will be on display, with people being encouraged to scan the code with their smart phones, taking them straight through to the website, where they can find more information about fostering and submit an initial online enquiry. Wallet cards will also be distributed to provide interested people with the You Can Foster contact details.

Saints star James Roby said: "We’re delighted to support any initiative which centres on the wellbeing of children across the North West and in particular those who are vulnerable. The Saints would encourage people who wish to find out more about fostering and the possibilities for changing children's lives to join the campaign."
