Stage play with a difference

A stage play with a difference is touring St.Helens schools as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of breast-feeding.

This presentation, by The Health Improvement Team - part of Halton & St Helens PCT & St Helens Council & the drama company artzideas., is aimed at younger children as it is believed that children are influenced at an earlier age. The principles of breast-feeding are closely linked with learning about and adopting a healthy lifestyle, a topic which is well established by the end of the Key Stage 2 curriculum.

During the play, the children are encouraged to join in the discussion and show their own knowledge and experience on health matters and child development. It is hoped that as well as showing the importance of breast-feeding in the development of a healthy baby, it will encourage girls and boys to look at this subject in a more mature way.

The play is approximately 45 minutes in length and schools are asked to enable children to complete a pre and post questionnaire on the subject. These questionnaires will be sent prior to the visit. It is hoped that during the post discussion the children should be reminded to consider the action of drama before responding.

Councillor Shirley Evans, Executive Member for Children and Young People’s Services at St.Helens Council said: “There is clear evidence that younger pupils are more receptive to health messages and are able to make informed decisions. After watching the play/presentation many of the pupils said they now realised the benefits of healthier lifestyles.”
